The shepherd Tityrus, fearing for his daughter Galatea’s life, disguises her as a boy and sends her into the woods. But Tityrus isn’t the only villager to form this plan to hide his daughter from the gods: Melibeus sends his daughter Phillida to the woods as well, dressed as a boy. In men’s clothing, Galatea and Phillida meet—and fall in love.

In the adventures that follow, Segasto’s jealous plots, his servant Mouse’s antics, and wild man Bremo’s brutality all attempt to end the love story of the play’s two heroes.
